The Manhasset Bay Sportsmen’s Club (MBSC) will sponsor its annual Skip Campbell Flounder Derby, a fishing contest for boys and girls under 16 years of age, from 9 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, May 18th, at the Town of North Hempstead Dock on Lower Main Street.
There is no charge for the event. Bait and tackle will be provided, as well as free soda and hot dogs for the kids and their parents. MBSC members will be on hand to give advice and offer assistance. Prizes will be awarded for first fish by a boy, first fish by a girl, most fish by a boy and most fish by a girl. Additional prizes will be awarded by raffle at the conclusion of the derby and each child will receive a certificate of participation.
There is no rain date. In the event of severe inclement weather, the Derby will be canceled. MBSC has sponsored over 100 Town Dock fishing contests for boys and girls, which includes late summer Snapper Derby and the Spring Flounder Derby. More than 20,000 youngsters have competed, cheered on by tens of thousands of parents and grandparents. The club sponsors these derbies as part of its program to encourage sport-fishing and teach good sportsmanship, conservation and to promote the general welfare of the bay community.
